Embarking on my Jiu Jitsu journey at 31, I've learned to appreciate the importance of foundational technique and resilience, thanks to a life filled with diverse experiences and learning the hard way. From my days wrestling at Alhambra High to serving two combat deployments with the US Marines and earning a BS in Transportation Design at ArtCenter, each challenge has left its mark on my martial arts approach.
Since December 2015, I've been unwaveringly committed to Jiu Jitsu, a dedication that led to the proud moment of earning my Black Belt under the guidance of Eric Ramey of 10th Planet Thousand Oaks in March 2024. There was a time in my life when I felt adrift, lacking any sense of purpose. It wasn't until I discovered the world of Jiu Jitsu that I found a path that not only gave me direction but also brought me immense joy. From the moment I set foot on the mats, I was captivated by the art and the freedom of expression it offered. Within just a week, I knew I had found my calling. My own transformation through Jiu Jitsu has solidified my belief in its power to change lives, and I am deeply committed to inspiring others on their own journeys.
My coaching journey started with inner-city youth wrestling through the non-profit Beat the Streets Los Angeles. Since 2018, I've been coaching Jiu Jitsu, always keeping it educational and emphasizing fundamentals and teamwork.
In 2022, I launched GROUNDWORKS as a project focused on integrity, accountability, and personal excellence. My primary goal is to leverage Jiu Jitsu as a catalyst for enriching the lives of my students and empowering them to become invaluable assets within their respective spheres.
GROUNDWORKS embodies a farm-to-table approach to Jiu Jitsu, prioritizing personal growth and teamwork. My coaching has now become my craft and my style is all about keeping it honest and approachable for all. I use a constraints-led approach in training, using task-based games to encourage self-discovery and essential grappling behaviors; focusing on concepts over strict techniques.
With my roots firmly planted in the SGV (Alhambra, S. Pas. & Pasadena), establishing a meaningful presence within my community was of utmost importance. I am profoundly grateful and immensely proud to bring the art of Jiu Jitsu to my backyard! At GROUNDWORKS, we are committed to nurturing the innate goodness within each individual, recognizing that integrity, teamwork, and technical prowess are cultivated through diligent effort and unwavering dedication. Let us join forces in our pursuit of achieving something truly extraordinary!
